Sleeping Atoms is a visual story about the scientific heritage of Salaspils Nuclear Research Reactor in Latvia. It was built and launched in 1961, at the beginning of the nuclear era. Around the Nuclear Plant other scientific institutes appeared creating a science hub. Due to the strict Soviet security regime, information about the Nuclear reactor was classified. Only recently have former reactor employees started to share information and their own memory stories. The Reactor was shut down in 1998. A secret mission was conducted in the 2006, a removal of a highly enriched Uranium which was still stored at the reactor. Nowadays the brick building complex of once so important Nuclear science centre sits silently in the forest, while the scientists at the Physics Insitute, located near by, carries out complex physical investigations, including the ones for the space exploration.
